Journalists and social media

There’s a huge debate over how journalists should toe the fine line between their personal activities and professional obligations. A good dose of journalistic judiciousness should suffice, but a handy list always helps. Pull off a Post-it and attach these tips to your screen. Keep the following in mind before you post anything on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and whatever else comes along:

1. Get approval before friending, fanning, or following

2. Don’t discuss unpublished articles

3. Stay away from controversial topics

4. Respect your company’s confidential and proprietary information

5. Always cite

6. Don’t do or say anything that can get you fired
