Stretch your creative mojo

Four years ago, I became a member of www.getafreelancer.com, a website that serves as a job portal for creative and tech talent. At the time, I was looking for design work, but my account sat unused. The website was plain and poorly designed. It was less than appealing to a graphic artist.

Recently, I received an e-mail from Get A Freelancer, promoting a logo contest with a $10,000 grand prize. Quite the offer! I revisited the site after all this time and to my surprise found a revamped, handsome website that boasts more than 1 million users worldwide.

As a designer, I can’t not participate in the logo contest.

The value of these competitions—beyond the cash—is that they force me to compete with artists from all over the world. To prepare, I have to research design and logo trends. I have to step outside my daily design work.

The winning logo represents creative problem solving, and learning from the winner opens new ways for me to think about art and design. And any chance to step beyond client work ultimately makes me better at it.

The deadline for logo submissions is September 30, 2009. Take a shot at the pot and stretch your creative mojo.
