Mobile technology is getting a boost from the United States Postal Service this summer. Qualifying mailings will get a temporary price reduction if they integrate their mailing by using a mobile barcode inside or on the mail piece, according to the Mobile Commerce and Personalization Promotion.

To qualify for the promotion, which runs July 1 through August 31, 2012, customers must:

  • Use qualifying mailings: presorted and automation mailings of first class mail cards, letters and flats, and standard mail (including nonprofit standard mail) letters and flats
  • Use a mobile barcode that leads recipients either to a webpage that lets them buy a product or service on a mobile device, or to a personalized URL leading to a web page that’s unique to an individual recipient

Qualifying mailings may receive an upfront price reduction of 2 percent of the eligible postage.

The promotion shows how integrating mobile technologies with direct mail reinforces direct mail as a relevant marketing channel.

A hospital can utilize this new technology by driving mail recipients to a personalized web page on the hospital’s website. For example, that page could shows a patient all their upcoming appointments, and allow them to change their appointments right from their mobile phone. This will save the hospital postage, and it will save time by creating fewer reminder phone calls made by staff.
