Yes, some magazines are making money

Despite shuttering of iconic magazine titles in recent months, some others are doing better in 2009 than they did last year.

While we lament the recent loss of Gourmet and other excellent magazines in 2009 — Domino, Blender, and Portfolio are among the nearly 400 titles that have bitten the dust so far this year — some pubs actually are showing impressive growth. The Business Insider reports on 22 magazines that are making more money than they did last year, including Better Homes & Gardens, Ladies’ Home Journal, Saveur, Organic Gardening, Women’s Health, Endless Vacation, More, Flex and Fitness. And Media Daily News reports that one category that shows plenty of closings — regional magazines — is also responsible for new launches. We’ll save analyzing the secret of success for another time, but we can say that it’s heartening to read a piece of good news about print publications.
