You Can Now Donate an Organ “Officially” through Facebook

People started doing it and Facebook listened! This week, the social media giant Facebook is making it easier to save a life. Now users can enroll as organ donors and share their desires via their timeline. If they aren’t already donors, they can easily link from Facebook to their state’s database, where they can register online to officially become a donor.

This type of communication has been used in the past by individuals looking for organs. But Facebook’s involvement, which makes enrollment easy, has excited many. To accomplish this, the social media leader partnered with Donate Life America, a national umbrella organization for local groups working to increase the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors.

Nearly 114,000 men, women and children are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant. Thousands more need tissue or corneal transplants to resume normal lives or restore sight. This new initiative will prompt many to take the next step and register to become a donor.

Currently only about 43 percent of U.S. adults have signed up to be an organ donor through a state registry. Since so many people these days are now communicating online and through social media, this is a critical step in saving more lives. It will bring out the conversation and make more people aware.
